• German Expressionism Film Season

  The birth of German Expressionist cinema followed on from avant-garde developments in painting, theatre literature and architecture beginning before World War I and reaching a peak in Berlin during the 1920s.
  
  The origins of this style were heavily influenced by the historical circumstances of Germany before and after World War I coinciding with the Weimar Republic however the movements powerful aesthetic was inspired particularly by the Gothic horror novel Futurism as well as fairy tales.
  
  Robert Wienes pivotal film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 1919 became a critical and commercial success and paved the way for other visually expressive films such as Nosferatu 1922 and M 1931.
  
  Fritz Langs Metropolis 1926 was one of the last major Expressionist films and offered a startling vision of a dystopian future.
  
  The Institut Francais presents these masterpieces of German Expressionist Cinema from 10 – 16 September 2010.

• Shakespeare - A German Writer

  Shakespeare has been vibrantly alive in Germany ever since Goethe delivered his inspirational talk to a group of friends on St Williams Day in 1771.
  
  The evening will celebrate several German writers and film directors intoxication by Shakespeare. Martin Swales Professor Emeritus University College London will introduce extracts which will be read in English and in German and will be complemented with examples from German films.
