  • DISCOVER THE MUSIC OF NORTH AFRICA
    An evening of traditional and orchestral music written by composers from, or inspired by North Africa with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre Arabo Andalou de Fes.

    The programme includes traditional music from Morocco, Bushra El-Turk's Mosaic, Tarik ORegans Rai- Saint-Saenss Suite Algerienne, Bartoks Dance Suite Antheils Decatur at Algiers and Egyptian composer Amr Okbas Charon-Pluto I.

  • Middle Eastern Music Workshops
    Working in conjunction with the Chelsea Music Academy the Arab British Centre is delighted to host a four week series of Middle Eastern Music Workshops in the New Year.

    SESSION ONE - From Moorish to Modern Times

    Join us as we revive a rich Middle-Eastern musical heritage giving a narrative of the historical events from Moorish to modern times. We will introduce participants to a wide selection of pieces by renowned composers from across the Levant region and North Africa.

    SESSION TWO - Interactive Discussion

    Through listening interactive discussion and live performance participants will explore rhythm modes and improvisation in Arabic music.

    SESSION THREE - Darbuka

    Try for yourself the seductive rhythms of the darbuka a hand-drum commonly used throughout the Middle East. A skilled player can tease a complex range of sharp and deep sounds from this goblet-shaped drum. It is an easy instrument to learn and has a surprising emotional range.

    SESSION FOUR: Performance

    We will round off the course with a group performance of a well-known Arabic song. Joined by professional percussionists and instrumentalists participants will sing or play along – friends and family are welcome to attend the last session.
