  1940 was a year of some of the greatest heroic achievements of the Poles and of some of the greatest tragedies that were to strike at the heart of the Polish nation.
  
  It was the year when Poland functioned as a state without a state a year when Poland suffered her fourth partition by Nazi and Soviet forces a year when her citizens endured forcible deportations and executions, while others were scattered to all winds and still others undertook perilous journeys to join the newly reconvened Polish Army first on French and later on British soil.

  In the middle of Europe, in the middle of the twentieth century, some fourteen milion non-combatants, chiefly Jews, Ukrainians, Belarusians, and Poles, were killed in the regions controlled by Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, in a belt of territory between the Baltic and Black Seas.The lecture will explain the distinctions between the atrocities of both regimes and discuss the interactions of Soviet and German power in the territories between Moscow and Berlin.

  The international conference Warsaw the History of a Jewish Metropolis will gather top ranked scholars in the field of Jewish studies. More than 30 lectures on varied aspects of the history of the Jewish metropolis will be given in nine sessions over the course of these four days.
  
  The conference is coorganised by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of POLSKA YEAR
  
  The Institute of Jewish Studies was established in 1954 in Manchester by the late Professor Alexander Altmann and since 1959 it has been located within the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at UCL while retaining its autonomous status.
